Getting here

Drive in with daylight left, especially if the bay is part of the arrival.

Petoskey is a road-trip town for most visitors. The practical plan is simple: arrive before dinner, save the scenic north-shore drives for rested hours, and treat winter or fall weekends like they need extra margin.

Arrival map

Pellston Airport sets up the Petoskey arrival.

This map shows the main arrival choices before the rest of the trip gets locked in. Pellston Airport is the primary approach to compare first. Traverse City is the helpful backup or add-on choice. The lines are planning corridors, not turn-by-turn road geometry, so use live directions before you drive.

  • Tap a marker to see how each town fits the drive.
  • Solid line is the main approach; dashed lines are alternate regional approaches.

By car

US-31 and I-75 do most of the work

From Grand Rapids, Detroit, or Chicago, expect a real northern Michigan drive. Keep the last hour flexible so you do not miss the bay at arrival.

By air

Pellston is closest; Traverse City has more options

Pellston Regional Airport is the nearest commercial airport. Traverse City often has more flight and rental-car flexibility, with a longer but scenic drive.

Ferry day

Mackinac trips need their own timing

If Mackinac Island or a Straits cruise is in the plan, give it a dedicated day rather than stacking it after a late Petoskey morning.

Arrival rule

Do not make the first night complicated.

A good Petoskey arrival is bay view, dinner, short walk, done. Save Harbor Springs, M-119, Boyne, and Mackinac for a rested day when the drive can actually be enjoyable.
